MERLIN BEACH (5) stepped up from a mile and was given time to settle from an outside draw before winding up strongly for an eye-catching second over 2150m at this track. Fourth up now and he's all set to break through. SIR JAG (3) finished 1L behind the above in that contest at big odds, enjoying the longer journey. Hasn't won for a long time but that was easily his best effort. He may sit closer today and can make the finish again. AURELIO (7) presents fourth up for the Ballarat-based Kearney stable, and it has enjoyed success in Tasmania. He'd need to lift on what we've seen, but with Byrne Burke engaged, that's entirely possible. Middle distances may be his go. LORD HEAR US (4) improved beaten 3L at Hobart over this distance and has the blinkers applied for the first time. He should be running into it.
